I had one of these I threw together over 12 years ago out of some angle iron pieces laying around that took up too much room in the tool box and was not really planned out very well. I've needed more for a long time so I took time to make a new and improved model last Sat. New vs old is in the 6th pic. Never fails when peeps see things like this made around here they want one so I painted an extra one this morning and decided we would now sell them as a Wheel Horse tool. When or if it sells I'll make some more to keep around.
I have foldable wings on my home made welding table with slots for the axle to go through, 1st pic below taken when planning the new one. If you don't have anywhere for the axle to drop through you can just make a 1-1/4" hole in your work bench, space the holder up, or let the axle hang over the end of a work bench and clamp the angle iron on the holder down. The spacing on my welding bench wing is 1-1/2 and works fine to catch the cast iron case.
* If you want one custom built with longer uprights to keep the axle on the bench with a support on the axle end to support the case we can make one like that as well. We can basically make anything to suit your needs.
They are all done on the iron worker so they all line up perfectly, and are all the same. A pattern was made to be able to make more of these in the future. The new stand takes up very little room and multiples can be stacked if put in a tool box. It sits below the hole to remove the parts to get the shift fork rods out, can be mounted with the angle facing in or out, and works perfectly on either side of the case. It is completely versatile and plenty heavy enough to do the job.
