Started work on the 704 the other day.
Priorities are:
Transmission swap
General mechanical repairs
Paint the sheet metal including engine tins
New decals

The 5046 transmission leaks from every seal. The brake and input shaft bearings are shot and what lurks within is still a mystery. I found that the input pulley was driven part way on the shaft until it was stopped by a cocked woodruff key then smacked a few more times until the key broke out the inboard keyway slot in the pulley. The brake drum fared slightly better as it was simply driven on part way but not broken. The 5046 gets a tear down this winter but in the mean time I found a good 5025 which I re-sealed changed the gear oil in and painted.

Notice the brake drum on the 5046. From the paint wear it looks like it's been running that way for some time. Also note the creative dash decal placement...?

The replacement 5025

Trying out a new (to me) paint on this one, Rustoleum Banner Red Industrial and Rustoleum Clear Engine Enamel.

More to come later. Not in any hurry on this one.

Had someone just painted that tractor before you got it Major?

How fast does the new paint combo dry? :)

Geno it had been an older "restoration" (lipstick on a pig) The paint job is really bad, runs, fish eye, over spray,it pretty well complements the dash sticker placed in front of the shifter and was executed with the same skill level as the transmission work noted above. It even had the throttle cable connected directly to the governor arm when I got it! :rolling

About the paint:

The Industrial is fast drying 12 minutes to the touch and the clear Engine is 20 to the touch but after spraying 3 coats red, waiting 20 minutes and another 2 coats of the clear on top, it ended up taking about 90 minutes to handle. Still not bad. Interestingly the Industrial is supposed to be solvent resistant and the Engine enamel is gas and oil resistant. The Industrial enamel has very high gloss even without the clear. May just do the hood and gas tank with clear coat.

Here's part of the tech sheet for the Industrial;

1600 SYSTEM
ENAMEL AEROSOL
TECHNICAL DATA
IC-01
AEROSOL
DESCRIPTION AND USES
Fast dry, multi-purpose, modified-alkyd enamel aerosols for
everyday indoor/outdoor industrial applications. Dries in 12
minutes or less. High-solids content provides optimal coverage.
Excellent performance for both interior and exterior general
purpose applications with better solvent resistance and higher
gloss than lacquer-based aerosol finishes. Not for use on
galvanized steel.

The 5025 transmission is in and the engine tins are painted. Unfortunately the gas tank has a cracked bottom seam >( Ordered factory choke and locking throttle cables along with a 2-1/2" rubber grommet for the gas cap hole in the hood and some 1/4-20 knurled knobs made for a Harley Davidson seat to use for the hood hold down bolts. Now on to the sheet metal.

Paint is complete except for the tool box and rear fenders, which will be radiused to make the tips less pointed. The tool box is getting the bed liner treatment. The steering wheel also gets some tlc with a refurb later on.

Decals (thanks Terry) are on, new dash with the cables and ignition switch installed.
