For many years the tips on the pullers get replaced over and over. These little pot metal or whatever these are made of split when you really put some force on them. I had a puller out end of last week to take a Kohler engine apart and lost another one trying to get the flywheel off. Granted it was put on with an impact and way way too tight but the tip still should have taken it. The material is too weak and way too thin. I left the puller out last week to remind me to make a lifetime tip today...
I just took a scrap piece of 1" steel rod, turned the ends in the lathe, then drilled a hole in one end for the puller bolt. It still has 1" of steel at the bottom after the hole was drilled so I don't expect it to ever split or break no matter what. I've had the puller for about 30 years and it's a Made in USA Cal-van so I think it will last just fine. Just something I thought I would pass on for peeps having the same problem and wanted a permanent solution.
